Get inspired by the wonderful gastronomic events taking place at the moment. It’s time to make use of your Collegiate kitchen facilities and have some fun with your own version of Come Dine with Me or Great British Bake Off!
Scrap the Take Out
Just because you’re students doesn’t mean you have to live on rubbish food. If Jamie Oliver has taught us anything, it’s that good healthy food can be cheap, easy to make and absolutely yummy! These easy pizzas are fun, full of super-foods and delicious and what’s more they only take between 5 – 8 minutes to make. That is quicker and cheaper than your local take-out! Impress your friends and enjoy a cheap night in with your home-baked pizza and your favourite tipples.
All Hail Mary Berry
There is only one food show we are all talking about at the moment and that’s the Great British Bake Off. Isn’t it getting tense? You have to marvel at the creations these amateur bakers produce each week.
Last night’s semi-final saw the four remaining bakers tackle a patisserie-themed week. Unfortunately for Chetna she was eliminated after ‘sponge issues’ with a 20-layer cake.
It was sad to see the youngest contestant Martha leave last week; her incredible talent has proved that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you too can be a Star Baker. So if you know a victoria sponge from a baklava then why not display your talents for your fellow residents? Our Collegiate apartments are the perfect place for creating your own Signature Bake as each of our high gloss kitchens are equipped with combination oven, fridge/freezer and 4-ring hob.
Forage for Mushrooms
We are in the last week of British Food Fortnight that celebrates our nation’s wonderful food and drink. As part of the UK wide series of events, Funghi Foray is taking place this Saturday 4th October 7.30am – 3.00pm. Our Edinburgh residents can especially enjoy an expedition to a secret location within the Caledonian Pine Forest to forage for mushrooms. Led by mycologist Neville Kilkenny, you will travel about 1.5hrs to the secret location where you will also be treated to a light packed lunch of food and wine from Valvona & Crolla. Discover the pleasures and perils of cooking with wild mushrooms. Click here to book
A Tipple of Cider
Our Devon residents need to grab a bus to Killerton on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October for the 2014 Killerton Cider and Apple Festival. The two-day festival is to mark National Apple Day and culminates months of picking apples from the acres of orchards on the estate. Tempted? We are told a mouth watering traditional hog roast awaits you, oh and of course a cider or two!
There are many events across the country, why not check out an event near you?
Don’t hang up your aprons just yet
As we will soon morn the loss of Great British Bake Off (GBBO) from our screens, we can rejoice in the start of National Baking Week from 13th – 19th October. If you are looking for inspiration, they have teamed up former GBBO contestant, Cathryn Dresser to create 5 delicious recipes for you all to try.
We are expecting our Collegiate apartments to be bursting with the aromas of your delectable creations, and even your ‘soggy bottoms’. So on your marks, ready, steady, cook!
