It’s nearly Halloween, the night where we celebrate the mystery of the supernatural and go fancy dress crazy!

Halloween originates from the Christian holiday of All Hallows Eve.  In the UK lanterns were traditionally made from turnips; when Halloween arrived in the USA turnips were too expensive so they used pumpkins.  Now pumpkins are used worldwide as a symbol of this spooky night.

Although we’ve celebrated Halloween here in the UK for many years, we’re slowly getting just as creative as our American cousins. Fancy dress parties are a must at Halloween and we have our very own Spook-tacular Events at our student accommodation properties. Gateway Apartments in Edinburgh has their Halloween event night, which includes a pumpkin carving competition and we had a great Halloween party where two of our closely located London properties had fun which included prizes for the best Halloween costumes.

Fancy dress has become so big in fact that in a recent article in The Guardian Angels Fancy Dress, the UK’s largest costume hire company, said it expected to ring up £2m of sales over Halloween this year, double the amount taken in 2007.
