Many Christmas traditions in the UK date back centuries, if not longer. For example, did you know that the hanging of holly boughs can be traced back to Druids, Celts and Romans before it was adopted by Christians?
Whether your interest in Christmas is secular or religious, decorating for the festive season can be great fun and a great way to connect with those around you. If you haven’t already decorated your student accommodation, now is the time. Whether you’re based in snowy Glasgow or sunny Southampton, Christmas comes but once a year, so let’s make the most of it!
Decorating for Christmas can be great fun. You can pick up some lovely decorative items at your local Christmas market, which is a great way to support your local retailers, while also picking up a few Christmas gifts at the same time. Alternatively, use your best DIY skills to create your own decorations.
Either way, we recommend setting a date to decorate in advance, so that everyone in your property or apartment can come together and make a day (or night) of it. Providing festive snacks and tipples is an excellent way to bring everyone together. Mince pies, party food and other seasonal nibbles are perfect for sharing while you decorate with friends, with the merry sound of Christmas songs playing in the background. Steaming mugs of mulled wine will add to the festive atmosphere, as well as filling the room with the enticing (and very seasonal) aroma of oranges and cinnamon.
Of course, if you’ve already decorated, then there are still plenty of traditional Christmas activities that are fun to engage in with friends. Getting together to make a Christmas cake, then letting it mature until the last day of term when it can be decorated and shared out, or finding your local ice skating rink and twirling around on your toes in the chilly winter air are perfect ways to celebrate this festive season with your friends and neighbours.
