Introduction

If you’re travelling to the UK soon, what you need to do depends on where you have been in the 10 days before you arrive. Currently, the government is enforcing a traffic light system on those arriving into England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

There are three differing levels of restrictions in place depending on the country you are flying in from. It sounds complicated but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

We’ve gathered everything you need to know right here to help you enter the UK safely:

Green List Countries

When entering from a green list country, you must take a coronavirus (COVID-19) test on or before day 2. You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive. However, you must quarantine if NHS Test & Trace informs you that you travelled to England with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

An example timeline of your trip would be:

ANYTIME: Book your day 2 test anytime in advance
48hrs BEFORE: Fill out your Passenger Locator Form
DAY 0: Travel to the UK
DAY 0 TO 2: Do your day 2 test

Amber List Countries

When arriving from an amber list country, you must quarantine in the place you’re staying for 10 days and take 2 COVID-19 tests on or before day 2 and on or after day 8. You may be able to end quarantine early after you have been in the UK for 5 full days, if you pay for a private COVID-19 test through the Test to Release scheme. This test needs to be booked in advance before arriving in the country.

If you do not want to opt into the Test to Release scheme, you will need to quarantine for 10 days.

An example timeline of your trip would be:

ANYTIME: Book your tests anytime in advance
48hrs BEFORE: Fill out your Passenger Locator Form
DAY 0: Travel to the UK (e.g., Monday)
DAY 1: Quarantine begins (e.g., Tuesday morning)
DAY 0 TO DAY 2: Do your day 2 test (e.g., between Monday & Wednesday)
DAY 5: Test to Release (e.g., Saturday)
FROM DAY 8: Do your day 8 test (e.g., from following Tuesday)
DAY 10: Quarantine ends 11:59pm (e.g., Thursday night)

At Collegiate, we are happy to accommodate you whilst quarantining on your return from an amber list country. Availability depends on the property you are planning on staying at. Please contact your residence team to arrange your isolation period.

Red List Countries

You cannot currently enter the UK if you’ve been in or through a country on the red list unless you’re British, Irish or you have the right to live in the UK.

For those allowed to enter, you must self-isolate in a government approved hotel for 10 days and take 2 COVID-19 tests on day 2 and day 8.

Please see the UK Government’s website for more information.

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you must follow the red list rules. The same goes for visiting amber list countries in the last 10 days; in this case you should follow the amber list rules.
