Getting around

Unique to Porto is the old wooden tram system, part of the overall transport network providing a special scenic experience every time you travel. Train, bus, and metro systems are also available, providing students and locals with reliable and inexpensive modes of travel. Narrow one way streets make driving around Porto rather difficult, so opting for public transport, cycling or walking is the popular choice.

Mercado Bom Successo is where you’ll find fresh produce and delicious food, located in the centre of the city. Due to its rich heritage, Porto also has some of the country’s best speciality shops, selling everything from sweet and powerful port, to handmade guitarras. NorteShopping is a large mall where you’ll find many stores for your fashion fix, or you could head to Cidade do Porto which has all the popular European clothing brands and other amenities.

Porto has a diverse nightlife, whether you prefer a glamorous cocktail hour or an edgy scene. Underground, cosy bars like Bar Pherrugem and Bar Labirintho are always full with the city’s bright, young students and locals, or if you enjoy live music, you can scope out a host of intriguing venues like Hotfive Blues and Jazz club. Many of Porto’s bars are located close together off the Rua da Fábrica main strip, or if you want a big club night out, you can venture out to places like Discoteca Number One.

Porto offers many types of eateries, from fine five-star gastronomy to inexpensive quick bites. Traditional Portugese and Meditterranean cuisine can be found on nearly every street corner, and the city is also home to a full range of international foods.
