Welcome to Coimbra

Coimbra is a poetic metropolis in the heart of Portugal’s Centro region. Ancient architecture decorates the hillside and provides the backdrop for this unique and historic town. Home to the country’s leading university, Coimbra is the perfect destination for your studies. With Collegiate’s superior accommodation, you can enjoy a prestigious student experience in which you can embrace the beating heart of Coimbra.

As Portugal’s fourth largest city and the medieval capital, Coimbra provides an exciting array of historic and cultural experiences. Old stone walls line the city, and you will be part of the student community that boasts around 35,000 students, both Portugese and international. Paco das Escolas, the Schools Palace, is where you will experience many academic ceremonies with a history hailing back to the Baroque era.

Students in their hoards gather in the Repúblicas area, where the 16th-18th century architecture is home to a fantastic range of trendy cafes and terrace bars, as well as the city’s oldest and most beautiful buildings. Spend your evenings amidst a fascinating cultural blend of academia and contemporary social ideas, while listening to the melodic sounds of the Portuguese guitarra. After 10pm every night, you will also experience the Fado - Portugal’s signature genre of music that depicts the theme of destiny and fate.

When you want some tranquility from the vivacious student life, you can head to the 18th century Biblioteca Joanina, one of the world’s most elaborate libraries. Coimbra  also provides the backdrop for the longest river in Portugal, the Rio Mondego, which flows directly through the city. Take your time strolling along the riverfront and have your pick of places to wine and dine.

Coimbra is home to significant museums like the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, an art museum built on the hill showcasing dramatic Gothic pieces and more. Marvel at the Sé Velha, a dramatic ancient cathedral, and throughout your years as a student, you will come to know the secret passageways and local curiosities that weave through the city. Not only are you surrounded by an incredible architectural haven, but you are also only 50km from the coast, so you can take a break and be at the Atlantic ocean in no time.

You’ll find many artisans’ shops around the old town, as well as contemporary boutiques dotted around the city. For a wide choice of designer labels, popular fashion brands, and other general stores, head to Alma Shopping or Forum Coimbra. These large, modern shopping malls located either side of the river are popular with students and locals. You’ll also find smaller shops located in and around the central area.

Nightlife

Sipping cocktails and cold cervejas in the Repúblicas area is a popular option for Coimbra’s student community. Begin your evening in Galeria Bar Santa Clara, a quite coffee shop selling a wide range of drinks and aperitifs to get you in the mood. For a dance and a late night atmosphere, move onto Garden Bar, particularly enjoyable in the warm, dry weather, or head to top rated venues like Diligencia bar, or Bar Quebra to hear some live music.
