Things don’t get much more English than the annual Wimbledon tennis championships. The All England Lawn Tennis Club Championships, better known as Wimbledon, will run from 29th June to 12th July 2015.
One of the world’s most famous tennis contests, Wimbledon brings sporting stars from across the globe to South West London for a fortnight of intense, fast-paced action.
Every year Wimbledon inspires individuals up and down the UK to dust off their tennis rackets and have a go at the sport themselves. So this year why not get together with your fellow residents and test out your skills on your local court? Or if that sounds a little too active, why not plan a Wimbledon party instead and invite your friends to join you for live coverage in your cinema room?
An essential part of any Wimbledon party is the food with the traditional strawberries and cream the star attraction. Over 28,000 kilos of English strawberries and 7,000 litres of fresh cream are consumed by the half a million spectators who attend Wimbledon each year – that’s a lot of fruit!
This simple pairing of fruit and cream is easy to prepare but for those more adventurous residents, keen to make use of their Collegiate kitchens, there are a number of other Wimbledon inspired recipes available from cheesecake sponges to cheddar and sage scones and summer potato salads. With your supplies in place, get ready to sit back and enjoy good company while you watch world-class tennis action on the big screen.
Of course, you could always plan a trip to the actual Championships instead, to see some of the tennis in person and feast on strawberries from within the hallowed grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Remember to take an umbrella though – if there’s one thing more English that Wimbledon, it’s the fact that at some point during the Championships play will be paused to make way for the rain!
