Students of health, nutrition and biosciences courses in Birmingham are set to get a boost thanks to the announcement of Birmingham City University’s £20 million plans for a School of Life Sciences.
The development will see specialist laboratories added to the university’s Edgbaston campus, as part of a biomedicine hub that will form part of the fight against obesity in the West Midlands. Currently the region is the second most obese in the country, according to figures from Public Health England. The data reveals that 65.7% of people in the West Midlands are overweight. Only the North East has a higher proportion.
The School of Life Science expansion will begin in 2016, with students benefitting from the new premises from September 2017 onwards.
Eri Cuanalo, Collegiate CEO, comments,
“It is great news that Birmingham’s students are set to receive such a high profile upgrade to the School of Life Sciences. At the same time, a city-wide life sciences push is due to create a number of well paid jobs in Birmingham. This means that many of those graduating this year and next will have the opportunity to be involved in helping the West Midlands to tackle its obesity problem as part of their careers, while future students can enjoy the improved facilities at Birmingham City University.”
New students can enjoy two local accommodation options from Collegiate. The Edge Apartments are conveniently located in Edgbaston, offering brand new, high spec studios and apartments in an exclusive setting that houses just 77 residents. The building features a private on-site cinema and gym, as well as common and work rooms.
Also in Edgbaston is Brook Studios, which provides modern, purpose built studios to contemporary students who want the best of the best from their accommodation. Bike storage and car parking are available, along with the touches for which Collegiate is known – on-site management, safety features like secure door entry and high speed broadband and Wi-Fi.
Those who can’t wait for the new School of Life Sciences facilities to open before experiencing Collegiate are invited to find out more now, with bookings for September 2015 already open for both the Edge Apartments and Brook Studios.
